In order to become a phlebotomist you need clear communication skills, you need to be able to work well under pressure, you need to have an attention to detail, you need to enjoy working with people, you need to have a calming manner, and you are required to have excellent manual dexterity.

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) provides a highly respected phlebotomy training course that runs over an 8 week period.  The UCLA has a very respectable 97% pass rate for their phlebotomy courses in Los Angeles, an important consideration when looking at which school you will choose. The course is fully accredited by the California State Public Health Lab Field Services.  You are not required to have had any previous medical experience in order to register.   For the first two weeks, phlebotomist classes run on Tuesday and Thursday nights, as well as Saturday from 8am till 6pm.  For the remainder of the course the phlebotomy classes run only on Saturday’s.  The remainder of the course time is spent in the clinical setting, where you will learn valuable hands on phlebotomy experience in a number of different medical settings.  Each student is closely monitored by an experience and qualified phlebotomist while on clinical placement.  Clinical placement shifts will include day, night and weekend shift work.

Another one of the highly respected phlebotomist schools in Los Angeles is Long Beach City College (LBCC).  Their School of Health and Science offers Los Angeles phlebotomy classes in order to become a qualified Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 (CPT1).  The CPT1 course offers an entry level position in the medical field, and there is no previous medical experience required to register at LBCC.  Their course is also accredited by the California State Public Health Lab Field Services.  It is important to note that not all phlebotomist classes in Los Angeles are approved by this authoritative governing body.  When choosing which phlebotomy classes in Los Angeles you will attend, make sure you opt for a school that is approved by this organization.  The LBCC phlebotomy certification courses are divided into two sections.  The first section, the AH220 is classroom based and is completed over a semester.  During this semester you will learn all the necessary information relating to working in a phlebotomy job.  You will also be given ample opportunity to practice drawing blood from mannequins, and then you will have the chance to practice on each other.  The second phase of the course, the AH220AD, is run in the second semester.  It is during this semester that you will received on the job training and experience working closely supervised with a senior phlebotomist in a clinical setting, drawing blood from real patients.  Both semesters must be completed in succession.  You are not able to have a break between semesters one and two.  And you must have a minimum of an 80% pass rate in semester 1 before you can proceed into the second part of the phlebotomy training program.  Once you have completed both semesters successfully, you will be awarded your CPT1 certificate, and you will be able to apply for your new phlebotomy job.

Phlebotomist classes in Los Angeles may also be completed online.  There are currently two online schools for phlebotomy in Los Angeles.  They are Family Health Services Online, and Los Rios Community College District.  Family Health Services Online offer CPT1 courses and also advanced CPT2 courses online.  Los Rios Community College offers the advanced CPT2 course to those who have completed a minimum of 1040 (6 month full time) work as a phlebotomist.  The classroom learning portion is completed online, and there is clinical placement for on the job training and education for each student.
